The soviet apartment in Vologda. It's fascinating, for me at least, just walking around the cities and seeing all the little details of life in these old apartments.More >>

February 23rd, 2013
I followed the convoluted route someone had scribbled on a scrap of paper, north through the ragged streets of Erenhot. This frontier, desert town on the rim of northern China, bustled in the summMore >>

Video 48. Beautiful and interesting! So nice to see how people react, how curious and loving there are. There the lack of fluids, no stove and you needing to make a fire. So much power, dedication and strengh in you. Inspiring. Take care and the best to you
Thanks Pernilla, lots of funny encounters out there in the far east.
Hi, Benji
I found your video on vimeo, then i trace to here, very interesting to watch, I just came back from a travel in north China, and I’m not cycling this time, but still i know what feeling of staying outside when it’s -40… I used to do cross land cycling, but not in winter of northern country. As you gona enter China soon, if you need any kind local help, just call me or email me, i’m happy to talk to you! btw, i’m videographer based in Shanghai, probalbly we won’t meet, as you route in China. but there is little chance, you might meet my friend, he gona set off from shanghai by the end of april, then he gona cycling to UK, pretty similar route to yours.

Hi Jia, thanks. My videos are a little behind. I’ve already past China and Mongolia and almost arrived in Europe.
Yeah, maybe not until Africa, though I’m not sure about India, which is also on your route. Sorry, I probably sound a bit like your mother, but I’ve spent this year studying haematology, which involved learning quite a bit about Malaria. I just thought I’d mention that because apparently alot of prescription drugs you get in places like China, SE Asia, and probably Africa are counterfeit. So for something as serious as Malaria you really need to have genuine drugs.
I know the drugs are dirt cheap in SE Asia, but it’s a good point. Malaria is no fun at all.
Exciting, such a long way this leg! I was just checking out the map before.
Have you got some antimalarials?
It might be worth buying some malarone or something before you head back to the developing world.
I do have an old pack of malarone in the kit but happily won’t need it for a while.
Hey Ben,
I went through these videos this morning. Very enjoyable, was a good way to procrastinate before getting into some exam revision. Must be a lot of great memories.
When do you actually hit the road for the next stage?
Hey Dave, I’ve had a few setbacks but getting geared up now. With a bit of luck I’ll be on the road by late November.
Congratulations on your trip! I was curious to see how your Canon XA10 is holding up. I spent 6 hours today trying to figure out which camcorder to get for our trip and found the XA10 and fell in love with it. How have you stored it? Does it seem to have any issues with the bumps on the road from the bike?
My wife and I will be doing the continental divide next June, then down to Mexico, South America, Africa and beyond. Can’t wait!!
Have fun!!
Best,
Erek
Hi Erek, I haven’t hit the road with the XA10 camcorder yet. The stage one videos were shot with an old MiniDV, which survived the pumps fine but had problems with humidity, sailing in the tropics. I have it in an Ortlieb Aqua-cam, which is air tight. I’ll be sure report how it goes. Have a great trip!
