???????! Benji. My family and I sigh with relief you are alive in a bloody cold country and admired your very interesting reports and pictures from KARAFUTO. Do you know "YUTANPO"? It's a japanese classical heater. "YU" means Hotwater. "TANPO" means a bottle or a tank. Japanese used to use YUTANPO when they sleep. It's very cheep and safety way to keep warm their body and FUTON. Just filled it with hotwater and wrap it with towel or clothes and put it in FUTON. Not need fire. It must keep warm your toes in sleepingbag, and next morning, you can use warm water to wash your face. Try it but be careful for low temperature burn injury. We are looking forward to your next news. Be careful and enjoy your great journey.
Cheers from HOKKAIDO Shingo,Akiko,Shima and dogs

I think there is a lot to learn from your experience and I´m REALLY glad that you know well what you´re doing. Your blog is really really good and enlightening. I have to disagree with some of your thoughts though:

"Once upon a time discomfort was a way of life, so where’s the evolutionary benefit in fearing it?"

Well, I think discomfort is STILL a way of life in many parts of the world, one of them being where I am right now, and I believe only those of us who actually have always lived under a certain degree of comfort can find it challenging to face the lack of it. Moreover, extreme discomfort like not being able to sleep because you believe your toes are about to freeze, seems rather wise to fear... can you not call that just instinct for survival rather than fear for discomfort??

Be safe and don´t exagerate your pleasure to conquer the extremes...

Hi Ben,

Fascinating experience of down-to-earth events.
You don't have to be 'crazy' - but it helps.

Cheers, Murray

Terrific blog Ben. I think that one day in the future someone will quote some of your philosophical musings. They are really thought provoking.

Hi Iain, yes I've got spiked tyres. Thanks for the advice. I have got a few of those warnings. Should I be worried about highway robbery? On my way north to Okha now.
